19. Mystery Monday: What about William James?

William James O'Neill, son of Alexander O'Neill of New Albany, Indiana, grew up to be a steamboat engineer like his father and brother. On July 12, 1861, William joined the 23rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry for service in the Civil War.
He and the 23rd fought at Corinth, Vicksburg, Atlanta, the march to the sea, and the final Carolina campaign. William was discharged after the war on July 23, 1865, as a Corporal.
I have not found him after that date. Did he join a steamboat and travel west to another state? Did he die in one of the common steamboat wrecks or explosions? He was not mentioned thereafter by the family. He did not apply for a pension. What happened to William?
